Xiaomi Mi Smart Wireless Standing Fan Pro

The Xiaomi Mi Smart Wireless Standing Fan Pro is one of 9 fans produced and sold under the Mi brand. A relatively new product to the market, this standing fan can be used cordless, and can be controlled via both physical buttons on the top of the fan and WIFI connectivity for control using the Xiaomi Home application on mobile phones.

APPEARANCE & SETUP

As with most Xiaomi products, the fan only comes in one model, with a sleek full white finish. The fan itself was easy to assemble with the included tools (screwdriver and allen wrench), but it required further set up for remote controlling using the Xiaomi Home application. Once we located the product on the app, the instructions were easy to follow and the fan was connected within a couple of minutes.

Standing at 95cm tall respectively, the fans felt short compared to a traditional standing fan, although it was 7cm taller than the Novita GreenFan F-2. While the heights of both fans are too short to be used while standing, the fans were perfect for use while sitting. The fan cage measures 35cm in diameter, identical to the Novita GreenFan F-2.

FUNCTIONS & USABILITY

The physical controls of the Xiaomi Fan Pro sits at the top of the fan, with 4 buttons and 6 LED indicators. The first button turns the fan on and off. The second button controls between 4 fan speeds. Pressing and holding the second button also switches the fan between Direct Breeze and Natural Breeze modes. The third button turns the 140° oscillation on and off, which the fourth button allows you to set the scheduled turn-off for 1, 2, 3 or 4 hours.

Four white LED indicators numbered 1 to 4 indicates the speed. A blue LED indicates the wifi connectivity, while another white LED next to it lights up when the fan is in Natural Breeze mode. A battery indicator LED located at the base of the fan turns from white to orange when the battery level drops below 30%.

Without the space constraints of a traditional remote control, we were glad to see the Xiaomi Fan Pro fully utilising the application and reimagining how fans can be controlled, allowing much more granularity in the controls for the fan.

While you are only able to control between 4 different speeds using the physical buttons on the fan, the Xiaomi Fan Pro allows you to go really dial in on the controls with the app, with a fan speed slider that goes from 1 to 100. Similarly, while you are only able to set a scheduled turn off for 1, 2, 3, or 4 hours using the physical buttons, the app allows you to set the scheduled turn off anywhere between 1 minute and 8 hours.

The app also allows for additional controlling of the oscillation that we never knew we needed. With the oscillation turn on, you are able to choose the angle of oscillation. Instead of the default 140° oscillation, you can choose between 30°, 60°, 90°, 120° and 140°. The reduces the time the fan spends blowing at the wall or empty space with the standard wide angle oscillations.

When the oscillation is turned off, the angle selector is replaced by Rotate To Left and Rotate To Right buttons. Tapping the button rotates the fan slightly towards the direction you selected. Ever changed positions on your sofa and your fan doesn't blow at you anymore? Now you can redirect the fan back to you with just a tap of a button!

However, unlike the Novita GreenFan F-2 that provides both horizontal and vertical oscillation, the Xiaomi Fan Pro is unable to oscillate vertically.

The app also allows you to turn off the LED indicators, notification sound and apply a child lock. Toggling the Indicator button on the app turns the LED indicators on the top of the fan on and off. However, there does not appear to be a way to turn the battery indicator at the base of the fan off. The notification sound toggle turns off the beep that sounds every time a button is pressed. That ability to turn off the sound would be extremely useful in a sleeping child or infant's room. Activating the child lock disables the physical buttons on the fan.

Using an anemometer, we measured the lowest speed (1) of the Xiaomi Fan Pro at 1.7m/s wind. At its highest speed (100) using the Direct Breeze mode, the fan topped out at 4.1m/s, identical to the Novita GreenFan F-2. When using the Natural Breeze mode, the top speed measures just 2.5m/s.

CONCLUSION

The Xiaomi Mi Smart Wireless Standing Fan Pro is an impressive fan. The ability to use the fan cordless gives it increased flexibility, allowing you to use the fan anywhere in the house without the need to look for power sockets and have messy cords lying around. While it does not come with 3D oscillation, the ability to control the fan via the Xiaomi Home application allows for increased controls, including the ability to adjust the oscillation angle and added granularity in controlling the speed and timer.

The Xiaomi Mi Smart Wireless Standing Fan Pro is available from online platforms such as Lazada and Shopee for $149 at the time of writing.
