We have tested 4 of the most popular hair dryers in Singapore, and here are our thoughts.
A good hair dryer is essential for many of us. A decent hair dryer can make the difference between hair that's actually manageable and hair that you'd rather shave off and be done with.
What makes a good hair dryer? A good hair dryer gives you control, allowing you to adjust the speed and temperature settings to suit your hair and styling preferences. For example, fine hair does better with cool or warm temperatures, while curly hair requires low speed and high heat. Many hair dryers also include additional attachments that can really make a difference as they alter the airflow of the hair dryer. Some even include a 'cool shot' function that is is used to finish and set your hair with a burst of cool air.
A good hair dryer need not necessarily be an expensive one. Sure, you can spend $600 on a Dyson, but do you really need to? We purchased 4 of the top selling non-Dyson hair dryers that cost a fraction of the price of a Dyson, to find out if they are up to the task.
Braun Satin Hair 7 HD785 Professional SensoDryer
The Braun Satin Hair 7 is reasonably priced and packs in a bunch of technology. Braun's proprietary SensoDryer technology maintains the optimum heat and precise airflow by continuously monitoring and adjusting its output to stay at the optimum temperature. However, some of our testers felt that the 130°C max temperature might be a little too hot for comfort.
We were most impressed with its true cool shot function that was a step above all the other hair dryers we tested. The cool shot function found in many of the modern hair dryers use cool air to help finish off and set the hair style in place. We found the cool shot on the Braun Satin Hair 7 to truly generate cool air instead of the slightly-higher-than-room-temperature air from the cool modes of other hair dryers we tested.
For the above reasons, we awarded the Braun Satin Hair 7 as the BEST OVERALL hair dryer out of the 4 we have tested. Read our full review of the Braun Satin Hair 7 HD785 Professional SensoDryer.

Xiaomi SOOCAS H5 Negative Ion Hair Dryer
The SOOCAS H5 is a beautiful product with rave reviews on online marketplaces, and we understand the reasons why after our testing. Perhaps one of the prettiest looking hair dryer on the market, the SOOCAS H5 comes in multiple colours and designs.
The SOOCAS H5 comes with 4 settings - Warm, Hot, Natural and Alternating, but it lacks a dedicated speed control and maxes out at a rather low temperature compared to some of the other hair dryers that we tested.
Nevertheless, the SOOCAS H5 is extremely lightweight, compact and conveniently comes with a travel drawstring bag for you to bring along on your travels. Hence, we awarded the SOOCAS H5 the BEST FOR TRAVEL hair dryer out of the 4 we have tested. Read our full review of the Xiaomi SOOCAS H5 Negative Ion Hair Dryer.

Panasonic EH-NA65 Hair Dryer
The creatively named Panasonic EH-NA65 hair dryer was the most expensive of the 4 hair dryers we reviewed. We were highly impressed with the build quality of this hair dryer, and the satin finish on the product looked premium and was nice to the touch.
While Panasonic EH-NA65 give you the most flexibility with 3 speed and 4 heat settings in addition to a cool-shot function. It also came with a unique quick-dry nozzle attachment that promises to help dry hair more efficiently and rapidly by directing the airflow into alternating strong and weak channels.
We were however disappointed with it's low maximum temperature and a cool-shot function that was lackluster compared to the Braun Satin Hair 7. While the Panasnic EH-NA65 is an amazing product on its own, it narrowly lost out to our BEST OVERALL hair dryer, the Braun Satin Hair 7. Read our full review of the Panasonic EH-NA65 Hair Dryer.
The Panasonic EH-NA65 is available from online platforms such as Lazada and Shopee for $159 at the time of writing.
Philips Drycare Prestige HP8281 Moisture Protect Hair Dryer
The Philips Drycare Prestige packs in a unique infrared MoistureProtect sensor which monitors and adapts the drying temperature to prevent hair damage, which is a feature that none of the other hair dryers we tested had. It also did a decent job during testing, with a high max heat setting that was almost on par with our BEST OVERALL hair dryer, the Braun Satin Hair 7.
The Philips Drycare Prestige, however, did not impress with the cheap and plasticky looking construction. However, at under $100, the Philips Drycare Prestige performed well enough to perhaps be a solid candidate for a budget pick.
